The department of Complementary Studies and Key Competences is Kiel University’s central institution for cross-disciplinary learning. It offers the largest learning platform for all supplementary studies in Kiel and for students of all faculties of the University.

The Department German as a Foreign Language offers different kinds of language learning programs to all prospective as well as enrolled students whose native language being not German.

 

Functions of the Department Complementary Studies and Key Competences

  • The Key Skills Centre team offers courses for students in the area of supplementary studies (double-subject degree programmes) in the general optional sections.

  • Advice on the practical module „Professional internships within supplementary studies” is available in the Internships Office.

  • The IT organisation offers support to all members of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities; it is also a media support point for Kiel University.

  • The Language Centre German as a Foreign Language (LDaF) is the central university department for all students whose native language is not German.
     

Functions of the Department German as a Foreign Language

  • Prospective students at Kiel University do have the opportunity to attend a preparatory German intensive course in order to prepare for the language exam DSH (Deutsche Sprachprüfung zum Hochschulzugang). According to language skills obtained the exam may be taken either at the end of one-term attendance in class M II (proficiency level C1) or after two terms of attendance in classes M I (proficiency level B2) and M II (proficiency level C1).

  • Advice on the practical module „Professional internships within supplementary studies” is available in the Internships Office.

  • In addition to their study subjects enrolled students have the possibility of deepening German language skills in language courses ranging from level A 1 to C 2. Besides, there are specific German language modules on offer from proficiency level B1 up to C1 by which particular key skills can be acquired for a successful study. Provided that courses have been completed with success ECTS-credits will be awarded to the participants.

  • In cooperation with our partners such as the International Center and the German-Norwegian Study Centre (DNSZ) there are German courses available in the annual International Summer Course, whereas program courses for Norwegian partner universities are regularly taking place.
