The Language Centre German as a Foreign Language (LDaF) in Leibnizstr. 4 is for students whose native language is not German. All students whose German is not sufficient for university work have the chance to improve their language skills in intensive courses before starting their studies. To take part in the courses you must:

  • • apply in time to Kiel University’s International Center, with proof of your university entrance qualification
  • provide proof of a good basic level of German (level B1 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages)
  • pass a placement test at the beginning of the semester Participants may attend an Intermediate I (B2) or Intermediate II (C1) course, depending on their level of German. After completing Intermediate II it is usually possible to take the DSH (“Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang”): this is the entry card to studies in Germany . Students may also attend advanced courses (C1/C2) parallel to their studies.

The LDaF also offers evening classes at all levels (from beginners’ level A1 to advanced (C1/C2)) for short-term students (e.g. ERASMUS students), students of degree programmes in English, doctoral candidates and visiting academic staff.

Das Lektorat führt außerdem Abendkurse (vom Anfängerunterricht A 1 bis Oberstufe (C 1/C2) u.a. für Kurzzeitstudierende (z.B. ERASMUS-Studierende), Studierende englischsprachiger Studiengänge, Doktorand/inn/en und Gastwissenschaftler/innen in allen Niveaustufen durch.

In addition to this the Centre also offers courses for special groups, e.g. for the German-Norwegian Study Centre (DNSZ) and Kiel University’s International summer courses.
