The Key Skills Centre’s definition of teaching

Our definition of good teaching: In our seminars we are guided by the following principles, subdivided here into four areas.

I give the students the space and time they require to try out and reflect on new ideas and methods; I support this process.

I promote autonomous/independent learning and working by means of diverse methodical approaches.

I formulate learning objectives and explain/elaborate the actions that achieve these.

I create space/allow room for an interdisciplinary exchange among the students, the teachers and any cooperation partners.

I create a group atmosphere of mutual trust.

I encounter the group with appreciation and authentically./in an appreciative and authentic manner.

I motivate with the knowledge, strategies and courses of action I offer.

I reflect on my own role and indicate my subjectivity.

I trust the students’ capability and quality expectations and shape my course to meet these.

When/In creating my courses I am guided by the standards of Kiel University.

I promote co-operations within the university and with non-university partners; I make use of any potential for synergy.

I support theory-to-practice transfer with applications oriented to the current state of science.

I make use of feedback, personal reflection and further development courses – in my subject area or from colleagues – to continually develop in my work.
